Health and Wellbeing

Extreme long-term stress, nightmares, and anxiety are rampant among the immigrant communities in La Plata and Montezuma counties. Further, like many other communities of color, Latinx families experienced a very dramatic exclusion from Federal benefits during the COVID19 pandemic, leaving folks unemployed and without benefits. Health equity in any form is not a reality for our community.

Our team combines its expertise of holistic and culturally based wellness practices, with logistical and community expertise. We have experience working as case managers with non-profit organizations and have been trained in many areas that include family support services. We have years of training and experience working with survivors of domestic violence and have served on the board of the Colorado Immigrant Rights Coalition for 3+ years. Two members of our team carrie training on social and racial justice including certification from the School of Unity and Liberation in Oakland.

We implement culturally relevant wellness techniques and included systems navigation information that would support community members in accessing health care and basic human rights. All this is provided to the community while building child-centered spaces for relationship building, collective joy, learning, and growing strength in the Immigrant community. Because everything has been based on the relationships of comadres, our children and the children of our community are always the center of what we do.

Every month we provide free and mobile alternative medicine to underserved people in rural Southwest Colorado. We are currently holding two free in-person clinics per month at Amaya Natural Therapeuthics.

“After my stroke in 2019, I did not have access to a physical therapist, but attending the clinics have helped me a lot. I can move now and the pain is not as bad as it used to be. I also appreciate having a therapist that understands my language and culture, that makes me feel more comfortable with my requests” -T.S., resident of Durango, Co., single mother of three, immigrant and monolingual Spanish-speaking adult.
